Grand Rapids' Next Wine Bars Started as Bottle Shops

October 29, 2026

In early 2025, downtown Grand Rapids lost two wine bars within about seven weeks. A year and a half later, the wine bars returning to the city come from a different starting point. Grand Vin is a retail bottle shop that is moving into the Ledyard Building and adding a 20-seat bar. Pauly's Wine Experience opened in Midtown in May as a shop and a bar at once. Neither is a standalone wine bar. Both sell bottles to take home and pour glasses to drink there.

Two Closings in Early 2025

The first was GRNoir Wine & Jazz Bar at 35 S. Division Ave. Its owners announced that February 28, 2025 would be its last day. MLive reported that the owners pointed to post-pandemic struggles, including inflation.

House of Wine at 53 Monroe Center St. NW followed. It announced on April 15, 2025 that it had closed, and WOOD TV8's report carried no reason from the business.

After April 2025, someone downtown who wanted a glass of wine as the main event, rather than as a line on a cocktail or beer menu, had fewer places to go. In October 2026, Crain's Grand Rapids Business described Grand Vin's expansion as "filling a void left after a wave of competitor closures."

The New Wine Bars Have Retail Counters

The two newest wine rooms in the city share a structure. Each started from, or was built around, a retail wine shop, and the bar seats were added to the business that sells bottles.

Neighborhood Downtown Midtown
Address 15 Ionia Ave. SW, Suite 120, moving to 125 Ottawa Ave. NW 855 Michigan St. NE

Status Expected to reopen mid-to-late November 2026 Opened May 29, 2026

The model gives each business two sources of revenue under one lease. A customer can sit down for a pour, and someone who stops in on the way home can leave with a bottle. The 2025 closings showed that downtown can lose a place built around sitting down with wine. Both new operators have kept the bottle shop as part of the business.

Grand Vin Moves Into an 1874 Building

Tom and Kim Grimm opened Grand Vin in November 2021 as a retail bottle shop in a storefront that Go Java Coffee had occupied before them, according to Hoodline. Tom passed the Certified Sommelier Examination in 2020 and earned a scholarship as the top performer.

The shop is leaving 15 Ionia Ave. SW for 125 Ottawa Ave. NW, inside the 1874 Ledyard Building, which Hoodline calls one of downtown's oldest commercial buildings. The owners expect to reopen there in mid-to-late November with a 20-seat wine bar. That is a target date. The bar was not yet open when this went to press.

Grand Vin's events give a sense of what it plans to do with the seats. The shop already hosts monthly tastings, regional wine education, pairing events and five-course chef dinners. Until now, a tasting at Grand Vin happened between retail shelves. At the new address, the tastings and the everyday glass of wine will share a 20-seat room in one of the city's oldest commercial buildings.

The Grand Vin website still lists the Ionia Avenue storefront and its hours: noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, noon to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, closed Sunday, and Monday by appointment. Those are the hours of the current shop. Expect the schedule to change after the move.

Pauly's Opened This Model in Midtown in May

Pauly's Wine Experience opened Friday, May 29, 2026, at 855 Michigan St. NE near Houseman Avenue, in the space that used to be Maggie's Bar. WOOD TV8 described it as a hybrid: part bar, part retail space.

Owner Paul Faba has spent nearly 30 years in the wine industry. He told WOOD TV8 that he wanted a place where people could drink quality wine affordably and "without pretentiousness." He also said the industry itself shares the blame for driving customers away. The prices WOOD TV8 reported at opening reflect that approach:

  • Wine pours at $11
  • About 70% of retail bottles priced between $15 and $35
  • A 14-seat private tasting and event room, plus a patio
  • Beer, canned cocktails and nonalcoholic drinks alongside the wine
  • Meat-and-cheese plates for food

The second and third items show how the shop and the bar support each other. Most of the bottles on the shelf cost between one and three glasses at the bar, so tasting a wine by the glass and buying the bottle are decisions made at the same counter. Pauly's is open 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, according to WOOD TV8's opening coverage.

Revue's August 2026 roundup of new West Michigan restaurants and shops listed Pauly's alongside Our Brewing's new taproom at 738 Wealthy St. SE and Watusi at 1220 College Ave. NE.

What Changes for a Weeknight Glass

The hybrid model affects the details of an evening out. Pauly's opens at 3 p.m., and Grand Vin's Ionia shop currently closes at 6 or 7 p.m. The schedules come from retail more than from late-night hospitality. Both places are built for a glass after work, a tasting before dinner somewhere else, or picking up a bottle to bring to a friend's house.

The seat counts are also small. Grand Vin plans 20 seats downtown. Pauly's has a 14-seat private room for groups and events. Rooms that size can fill on a busy night. At a bottle shop, a full room still leaves the option of buying a bottle to take home.

The two owners also take different approaches. Grand Vin is run by a certified sommelier and has a schedule built around wine education and chef dinners. Pauly's was designed to make wine feel easy to approach, with most bottles under $35 and beer and nonalcoholic drinks on the menu for anyone not drinking wine. With both open, a downtown wine bar and a Midtown wine bar will serve different kinds of nights out.

Planning a Glass of Wine This November

  1. Now until the move. Grand Vin is still at 15 Ionia Ave. SW under its posted shop hours. Before you go, check its website for the last day at that address.
  2. Mid-to-late November. Grand Vin's expected reopening at 125 Ottawa Ave. NW in the Ledyard Building, with the new 20-seat bar.
  3. Any Tuesday through Saturday. Pauly's Wine Experience at 855 Michigan St. NE, from 3 to 9 p.m., with $11 pours and a patio for the last of the mild evenings.
  4. Group plans. Pauly's private tasting room seats 14. Grand Vin's tastings and chef dinners are the events to watch once the Ottawa Avenue space opens.
