"It's the other half of the fun, a few blocks away. Do both." That's the whole answer the new Holiday Market at Studio Park gives in its own FAQ when you ask about Christkindl Markt. The new market points its visitors straight to the established one down the street. The two are run separately, but they share an opening day, a street and nearly every hour on the calendar. That changes the planning question for this season. You no longer pick a market. You pick an end of Ionia Avenue to start from and a night to stay away.
Both markets open Wednesday, November 18, 2026.
The Grand Rapids Christkindl Markt returns to the Downtown Market at 435 Ionia Ave SW for its fourth year. It has more than 60 artisan gift and food vendors and runs for 28 days. It's large. WGVU reported in January that general manager Audrey West put the 2025 season at about 250,000 visitors, roughly 15,000 more than in 2024, with guests from 49 states.
The Holiday Market at Studio Park sets up on the Studio Park Piazza at 123 Ionia Ave SW, at the north end of the same street. It runs November 18 through December 23. The Arts Marketplace at Studio Park presents it. Its executive director has described it to WOOD TV8 as a nonprofit. The organization launched in December 2020 to host local artists and retailers downtown, and it supports its tenants with help that includes rent subsidies. MLive reported in July that Studio Park had secured 24 custom chalets for the market and that vendor applications were still open.
The scale difference is real. Christkindl brings 60-plus vendors. Studio Park has 24 chalets, which counts its capacity, not a final vendor list. WOOD TV8 reported that Arts Marketplace executive director Molly Ketchum's goal is to make Ionia the city's new holiday corridor. MLive put a number on that goal. Downtown is expected to draw more than 300,000 visitors across November and December now that the new market has been added. That forecast covers all of downtown. It isn't a head count for either market, and it sits about 50,000 above what Christkindl drew on its own in 2025.
Here are the regular weekly hours each market posts for 2026:
| Day | Christkindl Markt, 435 Ionia Ave SW | Studio Park Holiday Market, 123 Ionia Ave SW |
|---|---|---|
| Wednesday | 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. | 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. |
| Thursday | 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. | 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. |
| Friday | 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. | 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. |
| Saturday | 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. | 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. |
| Sunday | 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. | 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. |
| Monday and Tuesday | Closed | Closed |
In a regular week, both close at the same time every night they're open, and both are dark on Mondays and Tuesdays. The exceptions come at the very end of the season. The only gap is at the start of the day. Christkindl opens one to two hours earlier, depending on the day. On weekdays, the Downtown Market end of Ionia has the street to itself until 1 p.m.
That gap gives you the simplest plan. Start at Christkindl while Studio Park is still closed, then walk north once both are open. The evening hours overlap completely, so you can finish at either end.
Both markets close on Thanksgiving, November 26. Christkindl also runs short hours the day before, Wednesday, November 25, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. If your Thanksgiving week plan was an evening at the markets with visiting family, that Wednesday doesn't work at the south end of the street.
Neither market charges admission. Christkindl's FAQ says there's no entrance fee for the market or the Downtown Market on any day, and Studio Park calls its market "free to wander."
The spending works differently at each end, and that's where they differ most.
At Christkindl, the paid extras need reservations. According to the Experience Grand Rapids event listing, an Alpenglobe costs $450. That gets you a private, heated, enclosed space for up to eight people for three hours. Curling costs $125 for one hour on a 38-foot synthetic-ice sheet with eight stones. The market's curling page recommends groups of eight or fewer. Reservations for both opened before the season, and the market's home page tells guests to book early to get their preferred date and time. There's also a collectible element this year. Christkindl is releasing four new pieces of 2026 commemorative glassware, from a glühwein mug to a beer stein. Eggnog is back on the menu, and you get refill pricing all season if you bring your glass back.
At Studio Park, the market leans toward gifts from makers. The MLive announcement said it will feature Michigan artisans, makers and small businesses selling handmade goods, artwork, jewelry, home décor, specialty foods and apparel. Emily Loeks, Studio Park's director of community affairs, told MLive the team is "aiming for a festive and nostalgic vibe, both inviting and a bit playful." The setting also includes outdoor fire stations, seasonal drinks, live music, and holiday film clips on the big screen.
Ketchum explained the mission to MLive this way:
"In alignment with the mission of The Arts Marketplace, we're hoping to introduce new audiences to the incredible talent within our creative community and encourage shoppers to think local when making purchasing decisions."
Studio Park also has things around the market that Christkindl doesn't. Celebration Cinema, 123 Restaurant and the Canopy by Hilton are all part of the complex. Studio Park's own page suggests dinner, then a movie, all without leaving the block. So the north end of Ionia is the easier place to finish a long night out.
Saturday, November 21, is the busiest night on the downtown calendar. The Gentex Grand Rapids Santa Parade steps off at 5 p.m. Santa is due at Rosa Parks Circle around 6:30 p.m., and the city tree lighting follows at 6:45 p.m. Both markets keep their regular Saturday hours that day, until 9 p.m. at each end of Ionia.
For a resident, that leaves two clear options. You can treat November 21 as one combined parade, tree lighting and market night and plan for a full downtown crowd. Or you can save the markets for a weekday after 1 p.m., when both are open and the parade crowd isn't there. It's the market's opening weekend and the parade on the same night, so the first Saturday is the one to think hardest about.
Studio Park sends drivers to its attached parking ramp at 120 Ottawa Ave SW, which is open 24 hours. The market also lists The Rapid, the Silver Line and DASH as transit options.
The city's DASH shuttle is free and runs every eight minutes, seven days a week. It doesn't run on Thanksgiving or Christmas. Check the city's current route map before you rely on a specific stop. Even so, the setup is easy for a two-market evening. Park once at one end, walk or take the shuttle to the other, and come back the same way.
Here's one weeknight plan that uses the hours:
The two schedules come apart only in the last days before Christmas. Studio Park adds Monday and Tuesday hours for its final stretch, opening Monday, December 21, through Wednesday, December 23, from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Christkindl runs special hours of 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on December 21, 22 and 23.
Then the north end shuts. Studio Park is closed on Christmas Eve. Christkindl stays open on December 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you're doing your last-minute shopping on Christmas Eve morning, the Downtown Market end of Ionia is the only one still open.
Studio Park's FAQ also asks visitors to come more than once. Both ends are open five days a week until 8 or 9 p.m., and both add Monday and Tuesday hours in the final week, so there's plenty of room for more than one trip.
At Kate Houseman, I pay attention to how a room looks in December. A handmade piece from a local maker can be the kind of finishing touch that makes a staged room feel lived in. If you're thinking about listing your Grand Rapids home in the new year and want a plan for how it will show in winter light, schedule a free consultation and we'll walk through it room by room.
